How to extend a forklift's service life
Most expensive breakdowns start small. These habits catch them early.
Before starting
- Check tyres, forks, chains, brakes, lights and oil leaks every day.
- Check hydraulic oil, coolant and fuel levels, or battery charge.
- Note any noise or fault and tell the supervisor before carrying on.
While working
- Respect the capacity and load centre on the data plate.
- Avoid sharp turns with a raised load and unnecessary hard braking.
- Do not use the forks to push or drag loads.
Scheduled maintenance
Follow the plan in the manufacturer's manual: oil and filter changes, greasing and chain and mast inspection. Record every job; a clear history helps spot patterns and eases resale.
Spare parts and service
Ask before buying how wear parts (filters, belts, tyres, chains) are supplied and how long they take. It is the best way to avoid weeks of downtime.
