Training and safety with forklifts
A forklift is work equipment with real risk. These are the usual obligations and the checks we recommend.
Operator training
In Spain, the employer must ensure that workers receive adequate training and information on the risks of their job and the equipment they use (Law 31/1995 on Occupational Risk Prevention and Royal Decree 1215/1997 on work equipment). There is no single mandatory state licence: what is required is specific training, usually delivered by an accredited provider or the prevention service. Other countries apply their own rules; check them.
Inspection and maintenance
- Daily operator check: tyres, forks, chains, brakes, lights, horn and leaks.
- Periodic maintenance according to the manufacturer's manual.
- A record of inspections and repairs carried out.
What the machine should come with
- Data plate with the rated capacity and load centre.
- CE marking and declaration of conformity if used in the EU.
- Instruction manual in the operator's language.
- Safety systems such as a seat belt or operator presence system, depending on the model.
Best practice
- Respect the capacity and load centre on the plate; with a high or long load, real capacity drops.
- Travel with the load low and the forks tilted back.
- Mark traffic routes and separate pedestrians from trucks.
